In anticipation of a cross-country trek from Orlando, FL to the Grand Canyon I purchased an Optima Red Top Battery. This trip would take place in July so it was very hot. We drove to Turweep or Toroweep on the northwest rim of the Grand Canyon...after leaving the road we drove for more than 60 miles on unpaved, unserviced roads. At the very end of the trip, just after putting my truck into 4-low, all the warning lights went on in my dash. We made the final mile or so in this manner till we got to our campsite where I pulled the alternator...it had failed. The next day we had no choice but to make an attempt out of the area and hope for the best. We made the full 60+ miles driving at no more than 30mph in blistering heat on just the battery. Then we drove a few miles till we found a service station. The mechanic opened the hood and said with a smile that I never would have made it out of that area on any other battery. The battery lasted another 3+ years even after driving on just the battery for all those miles.
